Van H. Rule

Van H. Rule I'm 45 years old & I live in Hanford, California. I'm a purchasing agent for a large manufacturing company. I have been married to my wife Debbie for 20 years & we have a grown up daughter. I am retired from the US navy where I served for 20 years. Besides my interest in genealogy I am interested in anything outdoors, I particularly like hunting & fishing.

The earliest record I have of my line is John Edwin RULE born abt 1820 in Cornwall. He married Sarah Ellen SIMMS in 1842. She was born abt 1822. They emigrated to Schullsburg, Wisconsin, USA in 1848 on a copper bottomed sailing ship. In Wisconsin he owned land near his brothers, George, James & William. John & Sarah had five children, Mary, James, Sarah (Sadie), John E. & Charles Thomas. In late 1863 or early 1864, John died in some type of accident. This was shortly before Charles Thomas (my great grandfather) was born. After John Sr. died, Sarah took the children & moved to Friend, Nebraska. I lost track of her after that, as I haven't been able to find any death certificate for her.

Eventually two of the boys, John Jr. & Charles Thomas, moved to Kansas. They lived in Kanorado for a time & then started their own town, Ruleton, Kansas. They prospered there as Charles ran a store & John Jr. was elected county treasurer. At some point John Jr. moved back to Nebraska & Charles moved to Paonia, Colorado. He came into money as he inherited a lot from his sister Sadie. He went on to be a successful rancher & investor. He had married Evaline ALLEN back in Kanorado, Kansas. He lived until 1958 & she lived to 1954.

The problem I have is trying to trace back from John Edwin RULE & Sarah SIMMS. I have been over numerous websites including genuki & can find no record of them. No birth certificates, baptismals, marriage licenses, or records of emigration. I want to trace my lineage back to Cornwall. Maybe even find some relations over there, but I have to get a link back from John E. RULE. On the LDS website, they show his birthday as 1836 & that he was born in Wisconsin. That can't be right if they were married in 1842. I even found another so called link that showed him being born in 1845 in Camborne, Cornwall. It shows his parents as William RULE & Susanna QUENTRAL. I don't think that was right as that would have made him too young to have had all those kids.

I am at a standstill. Part of the reason I want to trace my lineage back to Cornwall, is I wonder how my family would have turned out if John hadn't decided to emigrate. One way for me to see how life might have been for me is to correspond with folks over there, but I don't know what happened to John's siblings here in the States or if he had other siblings that stayed in Cornwall. So any help you can provide I would appreciate. sincerely.
